Nissan Motor Co. says all versions of new models it introduces after 2021 by its Infiniti luxury brand will propelled by electric powertrains.
CEO Hiroto Saikawa tells the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit that half of Infiniti sales by 2025 will be of either battery-powered or range-extended electric vehicles. The latter models will use Infiniti’s ePower drive technology. Like the powertrain in General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet Volt, the system runs exclusively on batteries that can be recharged by an onboard, piston-powered generator.
The only Infiniti model unlikely to be electrified anytime soon is the company’s big QX80 large SUV. That vehicle currently is driven by a 5.6-liter V-8 engine. Sources tell Automotive News that the big truck could switch to Infiniti’s new variable-compression 4-cylinder VC Turbo engine.
