VW to Equip All Euro Models with V2X Capability in 2019

Volkswagen AG is widening its rollout plans for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication systems.
Last summer the carmaker said it would begin offering the technology in 2019. VW now says all volume-model passenger and commercial vehicles across all its brands in Europe will be equipped with public wireless local area network systems (WLANp) starting next year.
The system enables cars to exchange information with other equipped vehicles and/or roadside transponders within 500 meters (1,600 ft). VW expects the implementation to “significantly” improve safety and traffic flow on European roads by alerting motorists about upcoming construction zones, icy roads, traffic signals that are about to change, disabled vehicles, approaching emergency vehicles and other traffic issues.
VW also envisions vehicles using the technology to travel in close-formation platoons.
The network uses the 802.11p communications standard that was developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in the late-1990s. The protocol was last updated in 2016.
